Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid that is a potentiator of alpha-adrenergic activity and has been shown to have effects on the central nervous system. It is produced endogenously by the human body and found in plants such as uncaria and rauwolfia. Yohimbine has been shown to have a positive effect on clinical studies involving blood pressure, although it can cause hypotension. It may also be used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Yohimbine acts as a modulator at adrenergic receptors, which are found in many tissues throughout the body. This drug binds to these receptors in two ways: it increases their affinity for epinephrine or norepinephrine and also decreases their ability to desensitize after exposure to these hormones.
