Description :Pargyline is a drug that belongs to the class of tricyclic antidepressants. It has inhibitory properties and acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Pargyline inhibits the production of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme, monoamine oxidase A. This inhibition leads to an increase in 5-HT concentrations in the brain, improving mood and alleviating depression. Pargyline also acts as an antagonist at 5-ht2 receptors and can be used for treating Parkinson's disease, which is caused by a decrease in dopamine levels. Pargyline has been shown to have low potency and does not inhibit the binding of compounds such as epidermal growth factor or interleukin 1β to their respective receptors.
