Propyl isovalerate is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula CH3C(CH2)2OCH2CH=CH2. It has a boiling point of 178 °C and a density of 0.8 g/cm3. Propyl isovalerate may be synthesized by the reaction of acetone, hydrogen chloride, and methanol in the presence of sulfuric acid as catalyst. Propyl isovalerate is used as a solvent for paints and varnishes, as well as an adjuvant in perfumes. The hydroxyl group on propyl isovalerate can react with carboxylic acids to form esters or amides. This product has a phase transition temperature of -68°C and can be extracted using solid phase microextraction (SPME). The glycol ethers are also known to have fatty acid esters that contain acidic groups such as carboxylic acids or sulfonic acids. These compounds are
