The chemical is chemically related to methyl ketones and tetracycline, which are also produced by these insects. 2-Tridecanone inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis at the transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) stage. This inhibition may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis or RNA synthesis, or both. 2-Tridecanone may also have an effect on fatty acid metabolism and diethyl succinate biosynthesis.
