- 2,6-Dimethylbenzamide
N-(2,6-Dimethylphenyl)formamide is a conformationally restricted analogue of acetanilide. It has been shown to exist in two conformations, one with a carbonyl group in the position alpha to the amide and one with a carbonyl group beta to the amide. The alpha form of N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)formamide has been found to be more stable than the beta form. This conformational difference was attributed to an intramolecular interaction between the carbonyl oxygen atom and the amide nitrogen atom.
The interaction between this substituent and the amide nitrogen can be described as resonance, which results from delocalization of charge density among neighboring atoms. The energy required for this resonance is provided by quantum mechanical interactions between the electrons in the alpha carbon orbital and those in the beta carbon orbital.
