Description

[1,1'-Biphenyl]-3,3'-diol (BPD) is a metabolite of biphenyl and can be found in the urine of humans and rats. It is metabolized by cytochrome P450 to produce 3-hydroxybiphenyl. BPD has been shown to have anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo, as it inhibits the growth of tumor cells through inhibition of DNA polymerase. This enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of DNA from RNA under conditions that are unfavorable for DNA synthesis. BPD also has a role in prognosis because it can predict the development of malignant tumors. The production of BPD depends on the type of polymerization reaction involved: if an aromatic ring undergoes dehydroxylation, then biphenyl will produce BPD; if an aromatic ring undergoes polymerization, then biphenyl will not produce any BPD.
