Propyl 2-furancarboxylate is a derivative of naphthalene that is used as a solvent and flavoring agent. It has a sweet taste and is soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, chloroform, and benzene. This organic compound can be synthesized by reacting furfural with the corresponding carboxylic acid. The addition of modifiers to the reaction mixture can affect the rate of the reaction by altering the activation energy. The resulting propyl 2-furancarboxylate has been shown to modify membrane permeability in nasal epithelial cells and inhibit indoleacetic acid production.
