4-Phosphonobenzoic acid is a silver ion complex that is used in the treatment of bacterial infections. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. 4-Phosphonobenzoic acid inhibits bacterial growth by binding to cell wall polymers, inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan. The chemical structure of 4-Phosphonobenzoic acid consists of two phenyl groups joined by an ester linkage to a carboxylate group. This compound also contains functional groups such as hydrogen bonding interactions and carboxylate groups that are involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds with other molecules.
4-Phosphonobenzoic acid can be identified using elemental analysis or X-ray crystallography and has a tetranuclear crystalline structure at room temperature.
