1-Chlorotridecane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is used as an industrial solvent. It is also used in the production of plastics, dyes, and pesticides. 1-Chlorotridecane is bactericidal and has been shown to have regulatory effects on mammalian cells. It has been used as a disinfectant for medical equipment and surfaces and as a polymerization initiator for polyurethanes. The molecule contains a hydroxyl group, which can be oxidized to form reactive oxygen species that are toxic to bacteria. 1-Chlorotridecane has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium sporogenes, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes.
