Phthalates have been shown to inhibit certain enzyme activities in humans and animals, for example, the activity of ryanodine receptor which regulates calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Phthalates have been shown to be toxic at high doses, but not at low doses or at levels that occur naturally in humans and animals.
