- Thiophene, 2,3-Dihydro-4-Methyl-, 1,1-Dioxide
4-Methyl-2,3-dihydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide (DHTP) is a sulfone that is structurally related to the sulfones. The cyclic and tricyclic skeletons are analogous to those of the phenylsulfones. It is prepared by the dimerization of 2,3-dihydrothiophene with sulfur dioxide in a refluxing mixture of acetic anhydride and pyridine followed by hydrolysis. DHTP has been synthesized from 2-methylthioethanol and thiophosgene in refluxing acetone. Analysis of transoid products using X-ray crystallography has shown that DHTP forms a dimer through six-membered ring formation.
