3-Nitrofluoranthene is a toxic, volatile organic compound that has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 3-Nitrofluoranthene is used in analytical chemistry to identify other environmental contaminants and can be found in wastewater treatment plants. 3-Nitrofluoranthene is an intermediate in the synthesis of many natural compounds that are used in pharmaceuticals and as dyes, pigments, and preservatives. 3-Nitrofluoranthene has also been shown to induce necrotic cell death in rat liver microsomes, which may be due to its ability to inhibit transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) through competitive inhibition.
