Dibenzoylethylene is a reactive, nucleophilic compound that forms coordination complexes with metals. It reacts with hydroxyl-containing compounds to form a 5-hydroxy dibenzoylhydrazone. The reaction mechanism of dibenzoylethylene is an electrophilic addition reaction of the carbonyl group and the hydroxyl group. This process is followed by nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon atom by the hydroxyl oxygen atom. Dibenzoylethylene can also react with fatty acids or detergents to form light emission products.
