Description

Clindamycin 3-phosphate is a prodrug of clindamycin that is metabolized in the body to its active form, clindamycin hydrochloride. This drug inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and preventing protein synthesis. The rate of inhibition depends on the concentration of phosphatase in the cell. Clindamycin 3-phosphate has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as well as Streptococcus pyogenes, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Clindamycin 3-phosphate is used orally for the treatment of infections caused by these types of bacteria.
