Description

Dirithromycin is a polyvinylpyrrolidone-based drug that has an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. This drug is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, and also has been shown to have synergistic effects with other drugs. Dirithromycin binds to the ribosomal RNA component of microbial cells and inhibits protein synthesis. It also inhibits the production of mannuronic acid in Streptococcus pyogenes, which may be related to its inhibitory properties towards human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Dirithromycin has been shown to have genotoxic activity in vitro, but not in vivo.
