Description

25-O-Deacetyl rifabutin is a prodrug that is converted to the active form, rifabutin, in the body. It has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in Sprague-Dawley rats. 25-O-Deacetyl rifabutin has also been shown to have antiviral activity against HIV and herpes simplex virus (types 1 and 2). This drug cannot be given orally due to its poor absorption through this route, but can be taken by mouth if given as an enteric coated tablet. The oral bioavailability of 25-O-deacetyl rifabutin is not affected by food or drugs such as erythromycin, probenecid, and cimetidine.
