Description

Azithromycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. 3'-N-Desmethyl-3'-N-formyl azithromycin is a form of azithromycin that has been modified in order to increase its activity against cancer cells. The drug binds to ribosomes and prevents protein synthesis by inhibiting peptidyl transferase, which is required for the formation of peptides from amino acids. It also reversibly inhibits DNA and RNA polymerases, preventing transcription and replication. Azithromycin has been shown to be effective in treating malignant endometrial cancer cells in vitro, as well as other cancers such as breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer. This drug can also be used as a diagnostic reagent for identifying related strains.
