• Description: 6-Benzyl 4-ethyl 2-chloro-7,8-dihydropyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidine-4,6(5H)-dicarboxylate (BEDPC) is a pyrimidine derivative that is used in the synthesis of pyrimidines and dihydropyrimidines. It is a structural analogue of the anti-malarial drug pyrimethamine and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. BEDPC binds to bacterial ribosomes and prevents the formation of an enzyme complex with the protein synthetase required for protein synthesis. This binding inhibits the elongation phase of protein synthesis, leading to cell death.
