Herbicidin E is a novel antimicrobial peptide that belongs to the class of herbicides. It is a host-selective and broad spectrum antibiotic, which has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The biosynthesis gene for Herbicidin E was identified in a strain of the bacterium Streptomyces griseoviridis by homology screening. This gene encodes an enzyme responsible for producing the amino acid sequence that makes up Herbicidin E. The transporter gene that is required for the transport of this amino acid sequence into the bacterial cell wall was also identified. Herbicidin E has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
