Description

Kitasamycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat bowel disease. It was originally isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces kitasatoensis, a soil-dwelling organism that produces the antibiotic as a secondary metabolite. Kitasamycin has been shown to be effective against bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as penicillin and erythromycin. The drug binds to the enzyme's active site and inhibits its activity by forming covalent linkages with amino acid side chains on the enzyme. Kitasamycin has been shown to induce toxicity in animal studies when given at high doses.
