Prulifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It binds to the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Prulifloxacin has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and avian influenza, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Prulifloxacin has minimal toxicity in animal studies and can be used for the treatment of chronic bronchitis in humans. Prulifloxacin also has a low toxicity profile in humans with no significant changes in blood pressure or heart rate. This drug can also be used for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections.
