Description

Sterigmatocystin is a natural pigment that is toxic to humans and animals. It has been shown to cause squamous cell carcinoma in rats, but it is not known whether sterigmatocystin causes cancer in humans. Sterigmatocystin binds to DNA and inhibits the enzyme activities of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, ribonuclease A, and alkaline phosphatase. It also induces apoptosis by inhibiting the expression of bcl-2 protein, an anti-apoptotic protein. Sterigmatocystin has been used as a chromatographic standard for the analytical determination of other substances in biological samples. The rate constant for sterigmatocystin may be determined from its binding constants with colloidal gold or calcium pantothenate, which are part of the matrix effect on the binding process.
