4-Propyltoluene is an organic compound with the formula CH3CH2C6H5. It is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water and has a strong, sweet odor. 4-Propyltoluene can be used as a solvent for paints, varnishes, lacquers, and dyes. It is also used in the preparation of polymers, including polypropylene and nylon 6. This compound has significant effects on wastewater treatment processes such as sample preparation and mesoporous materials. 4-Propyltoluene can be used as an acid catalyst in reactions involving ethylene to produce butyl acetate or cyclic hydrocarbons from alcohols. The reaction rate of 4-propyltoleune depends on the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon.
