Diallyl isophthalate is a polymeric material that has high thermal expansion and water permeability. It is used in the production of polyurethanes, which are materials with properties such as low light, good solvent resistance, and high stability. Diallyl isophthalate can be synthesized by reacting allyl carbonate with calcium stearate in the presence of an oxidation catalyst. The reaction product has a molecular weight of approximately 400 to 600 grams per mole and consists of molecules with one allyl group and two carbonate groups. Diallyl isophthalate's chemical structure consists of a carbonyl group that is bonded to two hydroxyl groups from the diallyl group. Analytical methods for determining its properties include IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
