N,N-Dipropylacetamide is a chemical compound that has the formula CH3CONHCH2CH2CH3. It is an organic amide with a propyl group at the nitrogen atom. The molecule consists of a six-membered ring with two methyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom and one methyl group attached to the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen. The molecule can be classified as a weak base because it has an acidic hydrogen in its structure and it interacts with alkali metals (i.e., sodium) by donating electrons. N,N-Dipropylacetamide is soluble in many solvents such as water and alcohols, but insoluble in others such as ethers. This amide does not react with most other compounds or undergoes reactions that are easily reversed. It is also thermally stable and does not decompose when heated; however, it does become unstable at high pressure or under vacuum conditions.
