Ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate is a prodrug that is converted to medoxomil in vivo. Medoxomil is an inhibitor of platelet aggregation and has been shown to be effective in preventing thrombosis. It also reduces the sensitivity of rats to certain drugs, although the mechanism of this effect is not known. Ethyl 7-aminoheptanoate has been shown to have low toxicity in rats, but high toxicity in mice. This drug has been found to be stable in vitro and can be used as a pharmacokinetic model for other drugs with similar properties such as benzamidine, which is also metabolized by liver enzymes such as CYP2C9 and CYP3A4.
