1-Phenyl-1-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (PCA) is a cyclic ester that has been used as a staining agent for microscopy, and to induce death in cells. PCA has also been reported to produce carbocations, which are intermediates in organic reactions. The fluorescence of PCA can be observed at around 470 nm when it is dissolved in water. This compound is soluble in chloroform and ether, but insoluble in ethyl acetate and ethanol. PCA interacts with hexadecanoic acid by acting as an electron acceptor, leading to the formation of a carboxyl anion. PCA reacts with carcinoma cells by inhibiting cell proliferation, due to its ability to act on the chloride ion and nitrate ion. It also reacts with phthalic acid by acting as an electron donor.
