Description

Diphenyltin dichloride is an organotin compound that is used as a catalyst in the treatment of wastewater. It is reactive, with significant cytotoxicity and has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats. Diphenyltin dichloride is a polymerization catalyst for ethylene oxide and other organic compounds. It forms complexes with chloride ions, which are then attacked by nucleophiles such as water or alcohols. The resulting organometallic intermediate can react further with nucleophiles to form new compounds. The reaction mechanism of diphenyltin dichloride has been determined using x-ray diffraction data and molecular modeling techniques.
