Amylmetacresol is a dichlorobenzyl compound that inhibits microbial growth by interfering with the synthesis of cell membranes. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in detergent compositions and has shown efficacy against viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Amylmetacresol has been shown to inhibit the replication of influenza virus in vitro. It has also been found to be effective against oral pathogens such as Candida albicans and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Amylmetacresol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin production.
