9-Hydroxydecanoic acid is a fatty acid that is produced in the body by the oxidation of 9-hydroxy-octadecanoic acid. It is also found in honey, where it can be synthesized by bees from hexadecanoic acid or resorcylic acid. 9-Hydroxydecanoic acid has been shown to have antimicrobial properties and is used clinically to identify and measure levels of lasiodiplodin, an enzyme that is released when bacteria are killed. The chemical diversity of 9-hydroxydecanoic acid has been studied using chromatographic techniques and it has been found to be a potential substitute for petroleum products as a raw material for industrial chemicals.
