Description

1-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3-phenyl-1,3-propanedione is a drug that belongs to the class of phenylenediuretics. It is used to treat congestive heart failure, edema, and hypertension. Deuterium isotope labeling studies have been carried out on this drug in order to elucidate its mechanism of action. 1-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3-phenyl-1,3-propanedione has been shown to be a prodrug which is metabolized by hydrolysis in the gut. The deuterium isotope labeled metabolite has been found in the urine and blood. It has also been shown that 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-phenyl-1,3-propanedione can undergo intramolecular hydrogen bonding with the hydroxy group from the hydroxyphenyl moiety.
