Description

Phenylbutazone is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It is an ester of 2-[2-(phenylthio)phenyl]acetic acid and is chemically related to aspirin. Phenylbutazone inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which produces prostaglandins, leading to pain relief and reduced inflammation. Phenylbutazone also has significant activity against amines, phenols, and other organic compounds. It can be used in medicine as a substitute for aspirin or acetaminophen due to its ability to inhibit certain types of white blood cells from producing cytokines that cause inflammation.
