N-(2,4-Dinitrophenyl)-L-alanine is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to inhibit collagen synthesis. The asymmetric synthesis of this molecule is achieved in two steps. In the first step, 2,4-dinitrophenylacetic acid is synthesized from 2,4-dinitrophenol and L-alanine. This is then converted to N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-L-alanine through an acid conjugation reaction with sodium citrate. N-(2,4-Dinitrophenyl)-L-alanine inhibits collagen synthesis by binding to the amino acid lysine on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It also inhibits transfer reactions between ER and Golgi apparatus membranes by binding to the protein mannose 6 phosphate receptor 1 (MPR1).
