The most common route for the synthesis of 3-octen-2-one is by acid catalyzed dehydration of octanal. This reaction takes place in two steps: first, octanal reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce 2-octanol; second, this intermediate reacts with water to form 3-octen-2-one.
