1-Methyl-2-nitroimidazole is a reactive molecule that has been shown to cause apoptosis in both cancerous and non-cancerous cells. It has been shown to be cytotoxic to ovarian cells and it induces the histone H3 cycle arrest. It has also been shown to have clinical development potential as a chemotherapeutic agent for solid tumours, including breast, colon and lung cancers. 1-Methyl-2-nitroimidazole specifically targets cancer cells by generating active oxygen molecules and causing DNA damage. This molecule is an electron acceptor that reacts with intracellular sources of superoxide anions, such as xanthine oxidase or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, leading to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
