o-Tolualdehyde 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone is a colorless solid that can be used to detect sulfoxides and diacetates. It reacts with these compounds to form a red-colored product. The spectrophotometric method is based on the formation of this red-colored product. This reaction requires that the sample be first treated with dimethyl sulfoxide or dimethyl acetate before being mixed with o-tolualdehyde 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone. Quantitative analysis of the product can be performed using a spectrophotometer. The detection limit for o-tolualdehyde 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone is 0.2 mg/kg and it has low toxicity when ingested orally in humans.
