9,10,12,13-Tetrabromostearic acid is a methyl ester used in the preparation of trifluoride which is a potent halogenating agent. It has been shown to have toxic effects on animals and humans. 9,10,12,13-Tetrabromostearic acid can be found in tissues of animals that died from exposure to this substance. The bromine atoms are attached to the fatty acids of the triglycerides on the surface of cell membranes. This causes disruption in cellular functions by inhibiting cellular metabolism and protein synthesis. 9,10,12,13-Tetrabromostearic acid has also been found to increase the permeability of cell membranes and disrupt ion transport across cell membranes.
