- Cyclohexane, 1,3,5-trimethyl-
Trimethylcyclohexane is a product of the thermolysis of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. It is a mixture of cis and trans isomers. Trimethylcyclohexane has been used in biofuels as an additive to increase octane rating. The reaction mechanism for the formation of trimethylcyclohexane has been determined by techniques such as chromatographic and kinetic studies. These studies show that the reaction proceeds via a radical chain mechanism with two competing reactions: one in which the methyl group abstracts hydrogen from the benzene ring, and another in which it abstracts hydrogen from a neighboring methyl group. The rate-limiting step is abstraction of hydrogen from a neighboring methyl group, leading to accumulation of cis-isomers. Trimethylcyclohexanes are adsorbed on activated carbon at different rates depending on their chemical structure. Adsorption equilibrium data can be obtained by plotting log S versus log K or
