2-Methyl-3-octanol is a reactive and stereoselective aldehyde that is produced by the reaction of hexanal with diethylether. It has been shown to be a nucleophilic reactant, reacting with chloride ion to form an alkyl chloride and hydrochloric acid. 2-Methyl-3-octanol reacts with homologues such as octyl alcohol, 3-methylbutanol, and 3-methylpentanol, forming 2-methylhexanal and 2,6-dimethylheptane. This compound is also able to extract fatty acids from a solid phase microextraction setup using a constant flow rate. The regiospecificity of 2-Methyl-3-octanol was demonstrated by its ability to selectively extract methyl oleate from hydrocarbons.
