Methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxypropionate is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of phytoestrogens. It has been shown to have a regulatory effect on prostate cancer cells in vitro. Methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxypropionate appears to regulate cell growth by inhibiting the transition from G1 phase to S phase in the cell cycle. Methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxypropionate also has an estrogenic activity and is capable of binding to estrogen receptors, although it does not activate these receptors as strongly as estradiol. The analog has been shown to be effective at physiological levels against breast cancer cells in mice, but is less effective against other tissues such as prostate, ovary, or uterus.
