N-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzenesulfonamide (NOBSA) is a nitroxyl donor that can be used to generate nitric oxide. NOBSA is a gas at room temperature and pressure, but it can be condensed to form a liquid with a boiling point of -7 °C. The technique of solid phase synthesis has been used to produce NOBSA in the laboratory. The spectroscopy of NOBSA shows that it exists as a dimer in the gas phase. Electrochemical techniques have also been used to investigate NOBSA’s electrochemistry. IR spectroscopy has shown the presence of an oxide byproduct when NOBSA decomposes in the gas phase. Nickel oxide and hydrogen peroxide are possible products from this reaction. Nitrous oxide is also a byproduct of NOBSA decomposition, which occurs at higher temperatures than those needed for nickel oxide and hydrogen peroxide production.
