• Description: 6,6-Dibromopenicillanic acid S,S-dioxide (DBPA) is an inorganic compound that is used as an antibiotic. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and preventing the formation of a complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. DBPA degrades lactamase enzymes that are necessary for resistance to this antibiotic. This chemical also has a high degree of stability against hydrochloric acid, which makes it useful in organic solvents. It is resistant to many resistant bacteria due to its mechanism of action and lack of substrate specificity.
