Description

BAY-Y 3118 is a synthetic antibiotic that is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. BAY-Y 3118 inhibits the growth of microorganisms by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. BAY-Y 3118 has been shown to be active against many strains of bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterobacter aerogenes. This drug also has activity against some viruses and fungi.
