WAY 161503 is used in studies on women with depression, and normalizes the levels of serotonin in the brain. It has a high affinity for both 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C receptors, as well as a high degree of specificity for these two receptors. WAY 161503 leaves are hydroalcoholic extracts from plants of the genus Valeriana officinalis. Studies have shown that WAY 161503 exhibits anxiolytic activity in rats at doses below those required for sedation or sleep.
