Description

Tebufloquin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has been shown to have antiparasitic, antiviral and antifungal properties. It is a natural product that was isolated from the bark of the South American tree Tetradium ruticarpum. Tebufloquin is active against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi, including some strains of Candida albicans, but not against Gram-negative bacteria. This compound has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis in human cells and may be useful as an anti-cancer agent. Tebufloquin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit in bacterial cells. The chemical structure of tebufloquin consists of two rings fused together with a side chain attached to one ring at R1 and R4 positions and with a side chain attached to both rings at R2 and R3 positions.
