(S)-2-amino-4-methoxy-4-oxobutanoic acid is a chemical that is used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. This molecule interacts with the amyloid beta protein and prevents aggregation, which leads to the formation of amyloid fibrils. The interaction between (S)-2-amino-4-methoxy-4-oxobutanoic acid and amyloid beta protein is thought to be due to its ability to bind to residues on lysine, glutamic acid, and fatty acids. (S)-2-amino-4-methoxy-4-oxobutanoic acid also causes conformational changes in the protein, which destabilize it by disrupting hydrogen bonds between amino acids. These conformational changes result in a decrease in the amount of amyloid beta proteins that are able to aggregate.
