Dicetyl phosphate is a hydrophobic organic compound that binds to cell surface glycoproteins. It has been shown to be toxic in tissue culture, causing cell lysis and necrosis at high concentrations. Dicetyl phosphate also binds with p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNPP), forming a fluorescent complex that can be measured by fluorescence spectroscopy. This reactive molecule is used as a probe in analytical methods for fatty acids and other lipids. It has been used in the synthesis of liposomes, which are spherical lipid bilayer vesicles that have been proposed as drug delivery systems for various drugs and vaccines. Dicetyl phosphate also interacts with water vapor to form esters such as monoclonal antibodies.
