Chloromethylmethyldiethoxysilane is a reactive, primary alcohol that has cocatalytic properties. It is used as an organic solvent and proton source in the production of polymers. Chloromethylmethyldiethoxysilane is also used to produce amines by reacting with ammonia or amines. This molecule has spacing between its atoms, which influences its conformational properties. Organosilicon molecules have greater reactivity than organolithium compounds due to their lower energy of activation and greater stability. The chloromethyl group on the silane molecule can be replaced by an ethoxy group to make ethoxymethylchloromethylmethyldiethoxysilane, which is also reactive but less so than chloromethylmethyldiethoxysilane.
