Potassium methanesulfonate is a sulfonic acid that has antimicrobial activity. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by damaging the bacterial cell membrane, which leads to water and ion leakage. Potassium methanesulfonate is used as a preservative in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The drug has been shown to be genotoxic in various tests, including the Ames test and an assay using calf-thymus DNA. It also shows antibacterial efficacy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus faecium.
