5-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2,4-imidazolidinedione is a hydantoin that can be synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with hydrochloric acid. The genus of bacteria and the bacterial strain are used as parameters to optimize the reaction. The hydroxide solution (sodium hydroxide solution) is used as a catalyst for the reaction. An acidic environment must be created for optimal reaction. A structural analysis of the molecule reveals that the imidazolidine ring is being formed by an intramolecular cyclization of two C=C bonds in an α-β unsaturated ketone.
